After using ESRI's ArcGIS for many years, I created some practice maps using QGIS to learn the interface. In California, I represented population density across the state using census tracts and 2023 American Community Survey 5-Year Estimates from the US Census Bureau. On this map, I highlight the populated cities across the state, which show a clear clustering along the coastline and along major highways, I-5 and CA-99.
For New York, I examined population density at a neighborhood scale using the Neighborhood Tabulation Areas that are calculated using 2010 Decennial Census data. These roughly correspond with neighborhoods that New Yorkers would commonly recognize. In 2010, 10 neighborhoods located in Manhattan and the Bronx had a population density of over 100,000 residents per square mile.
