The Keep Somerset Moving: 2045 Transportation Plan for Somerset County, New Jersey focuses on the current and long-term needs of residents and travelers. I created a base map and a set of 14 maps showing crash hotspots, equity scores, the multimodal transportation network, bicycle conditions, freight network, bridge and pavement conditions, and areas of interest.
We used these maps to evaluate transportation needs for the county. We focused specifically on equity and safety, noting that many of the areas with the highest concentration of fatal and severe injury crashes were located in low-income and minority neighborhoods. Using bicycle level of traffic stress data, we noted that the county is a difficult place to bicycle safely. Islands of low stress local streets are separated by high stress corridors, such as large, fast-moving county or state roadways.
